Nowadays Naval and Ocean Engineering can be defined as the set of techniques and technologies that allow the comprehensive use and exploitation of seas and oceans, as well as their conservation and maintenance of their ecosystems.

This definition encompasses a broad range of professional fields, such as:

• The design and construction of both civil and military ships, as well as their operation and exploitation.
• The attention to the world of leisure in its demands for sports marinas and floating tourist complexes.
• The design and construction of industrial complexes and devices, both floating and underwater.
• Underwater mining.
• Submarine distribution, process and communications systems.
• Underwater robotics.
• Marine fishing and fish farming.
• The use of winds, waves, currents and thermal and saline gradients for energy production.
• Seawater desalination and purification plants.
• Floating energy production plants.
